Family Outing: Fort Rodd Hill, Victoria BC.

I may be a bit behind in writing about our family adventures, but I hope it is not too late to write about them (even if they are not fresh in my mind). Last month, in April, we planned a nice week long vacation to Vancouver Island. This involved visiting our friends for 3 nights…

The amount of water a Humpback can displace during a breach is spectacular!
Anyone else like to set up their camera and tripod Anyone else like to set up their camera and tripod and capture a fireworks show as stills?

I do. I fiddle around settings but typically shoot around 8” to 10” at f11 and a low ISO. With my wired cable release I sit (or stand) and click away as I watch the fireworks display not through the camera. Then I get home and check to see how the images showed up.

When you cannot get out onto a boat to see whales, When you cannot get out onto a boat to see whales, you make use of the realtime chat groups that @comoxvalley_wildlifesightings has going on.

Yesterday (June 17th), chat followed a small pod of Orca northbound between Denman and Vancouver Island. Chat went a little quiet as people lost sight, but it then went crazy as the Orca entered the bay in Comox and came close to the breakwater of the marina.

Unfortunately, by the time I got there the pod was on it’s way south and near the tip of Little Mexico.

So these are a few of the shots at 600mm and then cropped heavily.

On a side note, I am trying to fond a better workflow to make posts more consistent. IG posts are one aspect ratio ( either 4:5 like these or 1:1) or with reels and stories which are 9x16. I’d like to post more and more often so I am going to see what works for me eh!
I didn’t get out much during the Herring spawn t I didn’t get out much during the Herring spawn this year, but here are a few photos. Think I managed to get out for a couple of hours over 3 days?

The herring spawn was here, and then it was gone. But it was neat to see how far the reports of Herring spawn occurred during the weeks.

Did you get to see any of the Herring spawn when it occurred?

If you live on Vancouver Island and have access to If you live on Vancouver Island and have access to getting to the ocean shoreline, I would highly recommend checking out the various chat groups of @comoxvalley_wildlifesightings for your area. With the help of the various communities you can potentially get the opportunity to see Orcas from the shoreline!

I would also recommend a decent pair of binoculars at least as viewing them from shore isn’t always a close encounter.

These few shots are cropped from images I took at 600mm.

This year maybe a year I won’t be able to afford to get out on on a boat to photograph them so I hope I can live vicariously through all the other photographers I follow here on IG that do take amazing photos.

With the upcoming Herring Spawning event, I’ve got fingers crossed in hopes of some good shoreline viewing experiences.

Have you booked a Herring Spawning tour yet? There are some great people operating out of the Comox Marina this year!
